A CRITICAL READING OF TEACHERS’ PERCEPTIONS OF THE INDIVIDUAL CASE STUDIES’ LITERACY PERFORMANCE AND THEIR USE OF COMPUTER TOOLS

The aim of this study was to investigate how the use of computer based-spelling checkers related to the student language literacy development. The researcher used method of qualitative and quantitative method. Test was used to know student students’ reading and writing performance. Survey was used to know student perception of tools usefulness. The teacher were surveyed and interviewed to investigate students’ performance of reading and writing.
 The test showed that the students are classified to six 3 level. Teachers’ view showed that reading and writing achievement of high level students were high standard. It was very different among high student, medium students and lower students. The result test was decrease. The high student had high frequency in reading book so the quality of reading and writing performance were high while medium and lower student use computer grammar checked and had lower frequency in reading book. Moreover, high level students were self-motivated in reading book, while medium and lower students were lack-motivated in reading book. The medium student found that reading were boring even lower student did not read book at all.
Based on the finding above, it shows that computer cannot be separated in children’s life. As the effect of addicting digital technology, children are more susceptible to exploit electronical device such as cumputer to build self identity and community (Mountifield: 2006). The use computer has reduced reading culture and it makes students think practically to use computer in every aspect.
This study is very useful and we can do more research about this topic. The research can be conducted in Indonesia where computer have been practically used by many students. The case study is more appropriate to teenager student because most of them have their own computer. The research will help the teacher to find more effective way to motivate students to increase their reading activity and stimulus student to use their computer wisely.
