Urban
society consists of people who have heterogeneity in many aspects. They come
from different geographical area that brings their identity such as language.
In fact, they should deal with the homogenization because of profession,
business, education, social class, etc. Then, the heterogeneity automatically disappear
because the necessity to build an effective communication. They cannot use
their local language variety because not all of the people can understand the
meaning. The communication will be one side communication and there is no
feedback whereas one the purpose in building communication is to get feedback
from the people.

The other
reason is about the prestige. The modernity of urban society asks the people to
use everything in general version included the use of language. People usually
prefer to use national language than local language to diminish the gap between
the language users. National language such as Bahasa Indonesia has high
acceptability and it can be used in almost context and situation.
